The National Weather Service confirmed that a rare southern California tornado touched down in South Los Angeles during the heavy rainstorm. The tornado hopscotched over a 10-block span, ripping off a roof and damaging at least five homes, officials said.
In Orange County on Friday, we watched as what appeared to be a waterspout touched down off Crystal Cove Beach in Newport Beach. That waterspout was likely in the same band of storm cells as the tornado that hit L.A., the National Weather Service confirmed. Waterspouts are much more likely in winter storms.
